HP Designjet 1000 Series Printers - TWI: System Error 09C000

This system error refers to an EIO Accessories error. Causes include a faulty or unsupported EIO Network card, a faulty Hard Disk Drive (if installed), or a failure in the Electronics module. Follow the steps listed below to determine the actual cause of the failure and to replace the appropriate parts.

NOTE: If the printer is installed on a Multi-Roll feeder accessory, some Multi-Roll disassembly is required to gain access to the printer. Instructions for Multi-Roll disassembly are listed at the bottom of this document for reference.

NOTE: If the printer is an “A” model, a Trailing cable must be sent with the rest of the parts listed.

NOTE: The fuse being sent should be used if a poor Trailing cable connection or a shorted Trailing cable blows the fuse on the Electronics module. Make sure to properly connect the Trailing cable or replace a shorted Trailing cable before installing the new fuse.

If any of the troubleshooting steps listed below solve the problem, attempt to verify printer functionality by printing several internal prints. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

NOTE: If Removal and Installation instructions are needed for reference during any repairs performed, refer to the 1000 Series Service Manual available on the Computer Care Web site for review or download.

1. Turn the printer off.

2. Wait 15 seconds and turn the printer on.

3. If error reappears, turn the printer off and remove Network EIO Card and Hard Disk Drive (if installed).

4. Disconnect the network and/or parallel cables from the printer.

5. Turn the printer on.

6. If the error occurs without the EIO card and/or Hard Drive installed, replace the Electronics Module (refer to pg. 8-25 of the 1000 Series Service Manual). Following replacement, perform a Calibrations Backup calibration and a Pen Alignment calibration as instructed below.

   NOTE: If printer is an “A” model, replace the Trailing cable during the Electronics Module replacement. Refer to pg. 8-39 of the 1000 Series Service Manual for removal and replacement instructions.
7. If the error does not re-appear, turn the printer off.
8. Install the EIO network card (Network cable must remain disconnected).
9. Turn the printer on.
10. If the error appears, turn the printer off and try the card in the other slot.
11. If the error appears with the card in both of the slots, replace the EIO Network Card. Following replacement verify printer functionality.

12. If no error appears, the EIO Card may not have been seated properly or installation screw might not have been secure. If no Hard Drive is installed, attempt to verify functionality. If Hard Drive is installed, continue with the remaining steps.

13. Turn the printer off and install the Hard Disk Drive.

14. Turn the printer on.

15. If error re-appears, turn the printer off and try the HDD in the other slot.

16. If the error appears with the HDD in both of the slots, replace the Hard Disk Drive and continue with step 18.

17. If error disappears, HDD may not have been seated properly or installation screw might not have been secure.

18. Print Internal Demo Print to ensure Hard Disk Drive is functioning correctly.

19. Verify printer functionality.

NOTE: The printer menu mode must be set to Full to access the Service Tests submenu. To verify, at the Ready prompt, scroll to the Printer Setup icon, and press Enter. Use the Arrow keys to scroll to the Utilities menu and press Enter. Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Menu Mode =. Select Full (if needed) and press the Back key to return to the main menu.

1. With the printer turned on, scroll to the Printer Setup Menu (icon of printer in lower right side of the front panel display) and press Enter.

2. Scroll to Utilitiesand press Enter.

3. Simultaneously press the Up Arrow and Enter keys.

4. Using the Arrow keys, scroll to Service Calibrations and press Enter.

5. Scroll to 7 Calibrations Backup and press Enter.

6. Select Electronics Module Repl, and press Enter.

7. Select Accept to continue the Calibrations Backup.

8. Press Enter when Calibrations Backup is complete.

9. Following the calibration, turn the printer off then on and verify functionality.

1. In the Service Tools submenu scroll to 8. Pen Alignment and press Enter.

2. Scroll to Accept and press Enter.

3. If paper is not loaded, the printer will prompt for loading of paper. Load a minimum paper size of A2 (16.54 x 23.39 inches/42.02 x 59.41cm) or ARCH C (18 x 24 inches/45.72 x 60.96cm) in landscape orientation.

   NOTE: Do not use Clear Film, Vellum or Natural Tracing paper when performing a Pen Alignment Calibration.

4. The printer will begin the Pen Alignment and display the time remaining to complete the calibration.

5. When the calibration is complete press Enter to continue.

6. Following the calibration, turn the printer off, then on and verify functionality.

1. Unload any media that may be installed in the printer.

2. Open the rear top-cover by swinging it away from the printer.

3. Swing the Motion Control Unit down and away from the printer.

4. Remove two T-20 screws (one on each side of the Motion Control Unit) that secure the Infeed Unit.

5. Open the left and right doors of the Multi-roll feeder.

6. Remove four T-25 screws (two on each side of the Multi-roll feeder, beneath the printer) that secure the printer to the Multi-roll.

7. Close the left and right doors of the Multi-roll feeder.

8. Stand in front of the printer facing the right side.

   NOTE: Have a book (minimum of two and three quarter inches thick) ready in your left hand to prop the printer up.

9. Using your right hand, grasp under the printer’s right end cover and carefully lift straight up approximately five inches.

10. With left hand, place a book under right side of printer between the printer and the Multi-Roll unit.

11. Gently set the printer down on the book.

12. Access to the printer EIO accessories is now possible.

1. Stand facing the front right side of printer.

2. Using your right hand, grasp under the printer’s right end cover and carefully lift straight up approximately 5 inches.

3. Remove the book between the printer and the Multi-roll feeder with your left hand.

4. Gently set printer back down on Multi-roll feeder.

5. Open the left and right doors of the Multi-roll feeder.

6. Loosely reinstall the four T-25 screws (two on each side of the Multi-roll, beneath the printer) that attach the printer to the Multi-roll feeder.

   NOTE: Screws must be left loose to allow adjustment and alignment of Infeed and Motion Control Units.

7. Ensure Infeed Assembly is fully seated into rear channel of printer.

8. Loosely attach two T-20 screws (one on each side) to allow for proper adjustment and alignment.

9. Close the Motion Control unit.

10. Adjust gaps between the tongues by moving the printer body; tongues of the Motion Control Unit should be centered between the tongues of the Infeed assembly.

11. Completely tighten the two T-20 screws (one on each side) that secure the Infeed Unit (Figure 9).

12. Ensure the tongues of Motion Control Unit and Infeed Unit are still aligned (make any necessary adjustments).

13. Tighten the four T-25 screws (two on each side of the Multi-Roll, beneath the printer) that secure the printer to the Multi-Roll.

14. Close the rear top-cover.

15. Turn the printer and Multi-roll feeder on, and verify functionality.

Only remove the corresponding side cover of the Multi-Roll that requires maintenance. For example, only remove the right side cover of Multi-Roll if only the right end cover of the printer requires removal to complete the necessary service. Follow the steps listed below to gain access to the printer to complete the necessary service.

NOTE: Only ONE CE needs to be dispatched to perform service on a 1000 series printer attached to a Multi-Roll feeder.

WARNING: Turn both the printer and the Multi-Roll feeder Off and disconnect them from the power source prior to performing any maintenance.

1. Open the left door of the Multi-Roll feeder.

2. Loosen the two screws that secure the left door to the Multi-Roll feeder.

3. Remove the left door.

   CAUTION: Be careful when removing the door not to break it.

4. Remove the two star screws (Orange) that secure the Front top-cover to the Multi-Roll feeder.

5. Remove the Multi-Roll feeder top cover.

6. Remove six T-20 screws that secure the left side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the front.

7. Remove the seven T-20 screws that secure the left side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the rear.

8. Remove the left side cover.

WARNING: Turn both the printer and the Multi-Roll feeder Off and disconnect them from the power source prior to performing any maintenance.

1. Remove the Right door and Front top cover from the Multi-Roll feeder (follow steps 1 through 5 of the previous section and remove the right door instead of the left).

2. Remove six T-20 screws that secure the right side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the front.

3. Remove nine T-20 screws that secure the right side cover to the Multi-Roll feeder from the rear.

4. Open the rear top cover.

5. Release the cable that is attached to the top of the right side cover.

6. Remove the right side cover.

Follow the procedures listed above in reverse order.
