HP Designjet 400 Series Printers - EEROM Model ID Configuration Procedure

In this document:

Document number: BPP90082
Last updated: 12-May-2003
Minimum skill level: 2
The EEROM Model ID configuration is incorrect. This can happen if a pre-configured board is being reused, the current board is incorrectly configured, or the model ID is not configured. An incorrect model ID can also cause steady Align Media + Cartridges + Data LEDs (Steady EKL system error). Use the steps contained in this document to correctly configure the printer's model ID.
NOTE: Check for Color Upgrade on 430 printers. Upgrade may be an accessory. Refer to reseller for new upgrade or charge STREP.
Configuration procedures
- Always print a Service Configuration, whenever possible, to view results.
- Turn the printer off.
- Remove the firmware/memory SIMM cover from the back of the printer.
- Remove firmware ROM and any memory SIMM installed in the printer.
- Remove the right end cover.
- Disconnect the media motor encoder cable from main PCA (connector ENC X).
- Turn the printer on while holding down the REPRINT key.
- Press the MEDIA SOURCE and MEDIA TYPE keys at the same time to enter the deconfiguration mode. The Fast, Normal, and Best LEDs will light up.
- Using a suitable tool, short-circuit pins 1 and 2 (the first two pins on the right) of the media motor encoder connector (ENC X). The Cartridges, Data, and Media LEDs should light up as you short-circuit the pins.
- Once you have shorted the two pins, the Fast, Normal, and Best LEDs should light up again.
- Press the CANCEL and MEDIA SOURCE keys at the same time to exit the deconfiguration mode.
- Configure the Printer with the correct Model ID as follows:
- HP Designjet 430 (Monochrome) printer: hold the MEDIA SOURCE key down and press the PRINT QUALITY + SETUP keys at the same time.
- HP Designjet 450C (Color) printer: hold the MEDIA SOURCE key down and press the PRINT QUALITY + MEDIA TYPE keys at the same time.
- HP Designjet 455CA printer: hold the MEDIA SOURCE key down and press the PRINT QUALITY + REPRINT keys at the same time.
- HP Designjet 488CA printer: hold the FORM FEED key down and press the REPRINT + CANCEL keys at the same time.
- Turn the printer off.
- Reinstall the firmware ROM and memory SIMM (if applicable).
- Close the SIMM cover.
- Reconnect the media motor encoder cable to the main PCA (ENC X connector).
- Turn the printer on.
- After initializing, the Ready + Data + Media LEDs (steady DLM) will be On (error in X-axis calibration).
- Perform an Accuracy calibration (listed below).
- Press the CANCEL key and print the Service Configuration sheet to check if the printer has been correctly configured as a HP Designjet 430, 450C, 455CA, or 488CA.
NOTE: If the printer is still incorrectly configured, the Align Media + Cartridges + Data LEDs (Steady EKL) error code will be displayed on the front panel. Turn the printer off and perform the configuration procedure again, starting at Step 2.
Accuracy Calibration
- Place a sheet of polyester film over the top of the printer for approximately 10 minutes to let it stabilize to the environmental conditions. Use a sheet approximately 24 x 36 inches, 61 x 91 cm (D-size). If sheet media is not available, roll media can be used if cut into a 24 X 36 inch sheet. When using polyester film, load it with the matte (dull) side down.
NOTE: If a polyester or matte film is not available, use HP Coated media when performing an Accuracy calibration.
- Turn the printer off.
- Press and hold in the MEDIA SOURCE key and turn the printer on (entering Service mode 2).
- Set the Media Type on the front panel to Coated Paper.
- Load the film with the matte (dull) side down, in portrait orientation.
- When the Ready LED lights up press the REPRINT key.
NOTE: The Ready LED will begin to flash. Allow several minutes for the printer to complete the calibration print.
- The printer will eject the sheet, and the Load Media LED will light up.
- Unload the sheet from the printer.
- Wait until the ink on the sheet is dry.
- Cut the sheet along the dotted line and reload facedown into the printer in the direction indicated by the arrows on the calibration plot.
NOTE: The Ready LED will begin to flash. The printer takes less than 10 minutes to read the calibration sheet, calculate the calibration data, and save the data in the EEROM.
- Unload the sheet from the printer.
- The Accuracy calibration is now complete.
- Turn the printer off then on, and verify printer functionality.
