HP Designjet 700 Series Printers - Noise Along the Carriage Path, General Y-Axis Troubleshooting

Introduction

Noise is produced when the pen carriage cannot move freely. Common causes are the Y-belt (carriage belt) being frayed or worn, obstructions or excess friction along the carriage path, the cutter failing to reach its home position, or worn or damaged Y-axis parts. Follow the instructions listed below to help solve these errors.

NOTE: Attempt to verify printer functionality after each of the troubleshooting steps below. Functionality can be proven by turning the printer Off, then On, and printing several internal E or D size demo plots. If functionality is verified, no additional parts should be replaced.

Troubleshooting steps

• Remove any obstructions such as jammed media from the carriage path.
• Clean and lubricate the carriage rails.
• Inspect the cutter, and replace if damaged or bent.
• Check the main belt for fraying or other damage. Replace the belt if needed.
• Verify the encoder strip is not damaged or does not touch the Carriage anywhere along the Y-axis. Replace the encoder strip if necessary.
• Verify the rear carriage bushing is seated correctly. To reseat it, stand behind the printer, and push in on the bushing with a flathead screwdriver until the bushing pops into place. If a pop is not heard, it is not correctly seated.
• If problems continue, replace the Y-motor, the Y-tensioner, and the idler pulley.
• Verify functionality.

NOTE: No printer calibrations are required following this repair.
