Introduction

This document describes procedures to correct excess friction or obstruction in the carriage path. The most common cause of this error message is the Y-motor. Follow the steps listed below to accurately troubleshoot the issue, and replace the appropriate parts.

Troubleshooting steps

Remove any obstructions such as jammed media from the carriage path.
Clean and lubricate the carriage rails.
Replace the cutter if it is bent or damaged.
Check the main belt for fraying or other damage. Replace the belt if necessary.
Verify the encoder strip does not touch the carriage anywhere along the Y-axis. Replace the encoder strip if necessary.
Verify the rear carriage bushing is seated correctly. To reseat it, stand behind the printer, and push in on the bushing with a flathead screwdriver until the bushing pops into place. If a pop is not heard, it is not correctly seated.
If necessary, replace the Y-motor, the tensioner, and the idler pulley.

Verify functionality

Turn the printer off, then on, and print several internal plots "E" or "D" size.
